Indonesia Blue Carbon

Support our initiative to protect coastal ecosystems and mitigate climate change.

A Global Carbon Storage Powerhouse

Blue Carbon is the term for the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems. Indonesia, as the world's largest archipelagic nation with the second-longest coastline, plays a crucial role as a blue carbon "superpower." Indonesia's blue carbon storage potential is estimated to be 3.4 Gigatons, or approximately 17% of the world's total blue carbon stock.

These ecosystems are highly efficient at sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere—potentially tens of times more effective than terrestrial tropical forests—and storing it in their biomass (roots, stems, leaves) and, most importantly, in the underlying soil sediments for thousands of years.

This immense ecological wealth is distributed unevenly across Indonesia's vast archipelago. Large islands like Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Papua support more extensive and stable mangrove ecosystems due to complex hydrodynamics and high sedimentation from major rivers . Small islands, conversely, are more vulnerable to environmental changes and human pressures . Papua alone is estimated to hold around 10% of the country's mangroves, some of which are exceptionally carbon-dense and have experienced low historical deforestation

Indonesia's mangrove and seagrass ecosystems constitute a global treasure trove of carbon storage, representing approximately 17% of the world's total blue carbon stock . With 3.3 million hectares of mangroves and an estimated 30,000 square kilometers of seagrass meadows, the nation holds the largest contiguous areas of these critical ecosystems on the planet . This immense carbon reservoir, however, is under relentless assault. Over the last three decades, Indonesia has lost an estimated 40% of its mangroves, primarily to the expansion of shrimp aquaculture, with the country now leading the world in the rate of destruction . The degradation of these ecosystems releases vast quantities of greenhouse gases, contributing significantly to both national and global emissions

Blue Carbon Initiative

Ecosystem protection does not always hinder development and investment. Now is the time for development and investment to actively protect ecosystems to ensure their own long-term sustainability—through tangible contributions and active participation in climate change mitigation

Collaboration and Action

Join us in collaborating to protect, restore, and expand mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and coastal wetlands—while transforming these ecosystems into spaces for community-driven economic growth.
